This year the Olympia High School Girl’s tennis team is more skilled and prepared for the state competition than ever. The Girls have begun the season undefeated, beating out Capital, Gig Harbor, Timberline and Yelm.
This year, there have been a few changes to the Girl’s tennis program. After an impressive 14 -year run, Margie Reed stepped down as the Head Tennis coach. This year Don Craig, former Girl’s Tennis JV Coach, has run the program. One change Coach Craig has brought this year is “team challenging,” where JV players can challenge Varsity players at anytime for a spot on the Varsity squad.
Even though Senior Erica Zeller is new to being captain, she is rather experienced in the area of leadership. She commented, “I try to work with everyone while being effective and efficient. Samantha and I really try to unite the whole team and introduce some new team aspects of competition and friendship.”
Junior Kelly Choi is new to Oly but already she feels very comfortable with the team as well as the tennis program. “The tennis season is going well, minus all the rained out matches,” she said.
The Girls are 5-1. Olympia faced Bellarmine Prep, the Bear’s biggest rival, on Monday, April 23rd. Although the Bears fought intensively, the Bellarmine Lions won the match 3-2.
Although a win against a State ranked team like Bellarmine would have been a fantastic victory, The Girl’s Tennis team is still on the road to State. Come support the team; the match against Bellarmine was just a minor setback. Our girl’s tennis will just keep getting stronger from this unfortunate loss, and who knows? The State title for the Girl’s tennis team IS still in sight.
