As seniors prepare for graduation, OHS music students must also prepare for their final concerts of the year, with bittersweet sentiments as they leave this chapter behind.
Senior Amy Blacklock is a soprano in the choir, which she’s been a part of since her freshman year.
“Whenever we line up to sing ‘If Music be the Food of Love’… It’s always so sweet when the seniors start balling, and the people [standing] on the side [do too.] It’s like a ripple effect,” said Blacklock. “If Music be the Food of Love” has been the last song at the final concert for years.
Shopia Knapp has 6 years of experience playing the cello. The orchestra’s class tradition honors not only the students but also Mr. Dyvig. “I’m looking forward to my senior year’s last concert since the graduating class gets our orchestra teacher a present as a thank you for teaching us for the past four years!” said Knapp. The band class also has a similar end-of-the-year tradition.
Annika Hillier plays both the clarinet and tenor saxophone. According to Hillier, her most memorable band experience is playing Omar Thomas’ “Come Sunday.” “It was the most complex and difficult piece we have ever done, but it was the most enthralling to play as it was like a church singing group on steroids,” explains Hillier.
Concerts are quickly approaching, with Jazz Band’s concert being May 21, Band’s concert May 29, Orchestra performing June 3, and Choir June 5. All events will be at OHS’s Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.
