Top 5 day trips you need to take this summer

Summer is almost here, and if you’re not going on a big trip out of the country, here are some local fun day trips to give you inspiration on what to do this summer.

1. Lake Cushman

Lake Cushman is about an hour to an hour and a half drive, part of which is on a dirt road. There are multiple

different swimming spots, including a park called Skokomish Park, where it costs $10 to get in for the day and it has bathrooms, picnic tables and a rope swing, or driving farther down the dirt road leads to spots right off the road that are more popular with younger people. There is a popular rock there that many jump off, as well

as a bridge near where people also jump off. There are many tanning spots on rocks jutting into the water and the water itself is very clear and a beautiful blue-green color. On the downside, in the earlier months of summer, the water can be very cold, but in this case, there are many fun hikes around where you can warm up. Stopping at Hoodsport Coffee Company for ice cream on the way back is a must

2. Westport

Westport is a relaxing escape to the chill coast vibes. It is about an hour and a half drive from downtown Olympia, but the second half of the drive is very scenic and pretty. There’s no such thing as a bad day at the coast, so whether or not it’s a sunny day or more overcast, it will still be a good time, and there is lots to do. There are surfing and Boogie boarding as activities, as well as a nice bike trail that allows for skateboarding. There is also the option of taking surfing lessons; there are perfect waves for beginners as well as bigger waves closer to the jetty for more advanced surfers. Jude Furubotten, a junior at Tumwater High School, said, “Westport is one of the funnest surfing spots in Washington.”

3. The River Ranch

The river ranch is a local option that offers swimming, tanning, and a good time. It is located next to the Deschutes River. There is a soft, grassy meadow that’s perfect for tanning or picnics. A short ledge located on the side of the river is a popular place for jumping into the Deschutes. The river has multiple calm swimming holes as well as a rope swing if cliff jumping doesn’t sound appealing.

4. Hood Canal
The Hood Canal is the perfect saltwater summer swim spot. It’s known for its incredibly clear
green water and in comparison to other saltwater swimming, the temperatures are not that cold.

5. Deschutes River Float

A nice relaxing float down the river is a much-needed day plan for his summer, to have a relaxing and fun day soaking up the sun and splashing around in the river. This float is just minutes from downtown Olympia. Start by parking a car at Tumwater Falls and then driving up to the starting spot, which is Pioneer Park. A good idea is to bring a separate tube for snacks and beverages to stay hydrated and fed. Sydney Kosa, a junior at Olympia High School, said, “[She] did this float last summer during a hot day, and it was the perfect little float that was both relaxing and fun in the bigger rapids.”
