The Olympia Bears Volleyball team has been on a winning streak the past few matches, playing against the Yelm Tornados on September 30, the Bethel Bison on October 1, and the Emerald Ridge Jaguars on October 6.
On Tuesday, September 30th, the Bears took on the Yelm Tornados in a home league match. Prior to the match, the Bears came in with a hot start, at 7-2, while their opponent came in at 3-4. The Bears dominated the Tornados in a final score of 3-0. In the first match, it was close with both teams getting on the board early and even a streak of trading points. Defense and blocking were also good, with Junior blocker Antoinette Obungu leading the pack with multiple blocks. Obungo expressed, “Constantly learning new things from the seniors has helped me play a lot since I’m just getting used to this new role.” The rest of the match was equally as well played for the Bears as the first match. The Bears led the whole game and finished strong, a clear standard in Bears volleyball.
A day later, the Bears took on the Bison and dominated the entire match once again. The first match ended in a score of 25-9, with Bethel digging themselves a big hole, causing them to fall behind early. The second match was closer, with it ending 25-18. Bethel gained confidence, but it didn’t last long enough. The last match ended 25-12, completing the Bears’ sweep. Senior Alice Fischer did a great job facilitating the ball, finding her teammates on multiple assists, and sophomore Stella Sheeren had various kills.
On Monday, October 6th, the Bears faced the strong and skilled Jaguars, who entered the match with a 7-2 record. The first match was very intense, with the teams going back and forth. Near the end, the Bears were down a few points with Emerald Ridge needing only one point to win, but the Bears stayed determined and came back to win the match. The rest of the matches were battles, and despite exceptional hustle plays from Elyse Juergens and Grace Scriven, the Bears were unable to pull ahead.
The Bears are 9-3 in the season and hope to continue the successful season. Senior Ellie Johnson shared some goals, “We expect to win leagues and districts, setting us up for a big state run.”
