Music activities spark joy, and teach discipline through challenging adjudications

As Olympia High School symphonic band students left the PLU performing arts center, the tension from their on stage adjudications began to fade. OHS band director Erik Curly explained, “An ensemble is really a group,” and as a group they walked away with valuable feedback and a few comments that even left Curly raising an eyebrow, in the end each student grew from experiences like stressful performances.

Being part of music activities sparks joy, fosters deep friendships, and creates lasting connections. It also installs discipline, teaching students perseverance, dedication, and the rewards of hard work through stressful adjudications.
