Chastity clubs were created to promote abstinence in adolescents until marriage, but have slowly spread from religious groups into high school clubs. OHS now has its own club, causing curiosity as to what it entails.
Sisters Katherine and Lucy Boyd are the president and vice president of the newly created Chastity Club, which has sparked conversations about what goes on and why.
Clubs like FCA and The Way Club are known to promote their respective religions. Despite assumptions of Chastity Club being another religiously based club at OHS, President Katie Boyd said, “I’m hoping to take it from a secular position so that anyone can apply to it … to their lives.”
Yet their first meeting showed a surprising outcome. “There were a lot more people there than I ever expected,” said Katie Boyd.
Ever since the announcement of the new club, Lucy Boyd had expected some backlash. “I had my doubts because I knew we were probably going to get a lot of negative reactions, and we already have,” said Lucy Boyd.
As a club, their goal is to spread awareness and share their knowledge with others in a generation where they feel Chastity is no longer practiced. Together, they discuss how to apply Chastity to their lives and “spreading the message of purity.”
Most of their beartimes are spent watching videos done by Chastity speaker, Jason Evert. “He explains it a lot better than I can [and] gives a baseline for people to follow. Then, as the weeks go on, we can get more in-depth,” said Katie Boyd. Jason Evert is known as an international Chastity speaker and is a co-founder of the Chastity Project.
“We want people to know it is an option … and in such a culture of sex and stuff, I think that people don’t think you can have a relationship that’s not centered around that or even involved in it at all,” said Lucy Boyd.
